Compressing Large Videos using Handbrake
Kapco IT
Open HandBrake
If you don’t have HandBrake installed, please submit a Freshdesk ticket requesting installation.
Select video for compression
If you don’t know whether a video is unnecessarily large, right-click the file and open the Properties dialog. Under the Details tab, the Frame Width and Frame Height fields tell you the frame size of the video. The goal is to reduce these values to 1280 and 720 respectively, so if these numbers are larger, like 1920 and 1080, the file can be used for the next steps.
The file can be imported into HandBrake with the File button. If this option isn’t visible yet, press Open Source.
Set video render options
Once the file is imported, under the Preset dropdown, in the General category, select Fast 720p30. This preset takes the input video and outputs the video scaled to a 1280x720 frame size at 30 frames per second.
Choose an applicable file name and save location
This is up to you and those managing the files you’re manipulating, but I’d like to emphasize the importance of descriptive file names and keeping an organized file system.
Encode video
Press Start Encode. When the process finishes, the video will be saved in the location you set.
